HILBERT KEBBEL TRENWITH CHANCELLOR was born at Ballarat, Victoria, on 15th August, 1895, the son of Mr. Norman George Chancellor and Mrs. Nina L. Chancellor. His education was received at the Central State School, Bendigo, and at the Bendigo Grammar School.

He joined the Bank on 3rd February, 1912, at Bendigo, and enlisted in the A.I.F. on 14th August, 1914. He was No. 382 trooper of C Squadron, 4th Light Horse Regiment, and was promoted to corporal in the following October.

After seeing service at Gallipoli, Hilbert Chancellor was, in February, 1917, promoted to squadron quartermaster-sergeant. As one of the original Anzacs he was granted furlough just before the signing of the Armistice, and returned to Australia as a corporal on 24th December, 1918.
