Clarence was the second of four children of William David Butler (born 1868 in Brisbane, QLD) and Emily England (born 1870 in Tarampa, QLD). Clarence and his siblings grew up in Brisbane and on the Darling Downs where their father was a Hotel Keeper. By 1913 Clarence was living in Nundah, QLD and working as an Agent, and in 1916 he was living at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, QLD and working as a Cheese Maker when he enlisted in the AIF.

Clarence served with the 49th and 52nd Battalions as a Private (Service No: 3126A) in France and was Discharged in 1919. Clarence returned to Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, QLD and worked initially as a Labourer and then as an Assistant until his death in 1953
