Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
At the time of his death, Joseph William Grundy was on duty with his brother and cousin, Hedley Grundy, and some other men of the 40th Battalion, when a heavy enemy shell, falling quite close, killed him and his cousin instantaneously, as well as Sergeant Clerke and Lance Corporal Morris. All the men were blown out of their trench and their bodies were found in No Man’s Land several days later. Their mates had been digging and searching for their bodies all through this period.
Joseph’s brother, 395 Private Thomas Clifton Grundy was reportedly in the same trench at the time and survived, although wounded. He died of bronchial pneumonia almost two years later on 13 November 1918, two days after the armistice.
