One of Australia's most successful soldiers and indeed soldiering families, Cyril Clowes began his military career as a humble lieutenant after graduating from the Royal Military College in Duntroon in 1914. In little over three decades later he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant General and served with distinction throughout two World Wars.
Cyril's brother, Norman Clowes (/explore/people/92832), was also a very successful soldier. After World War One he had transferred to the Indian Army and then in 1931 to the British Army which he saw service with during World War Two. At his retirement he had reached the rank of Major General.
A step-brother Trevor Marcel Clowes also attended Duntroon Military College and served as the commanding officer of D Company of the 2/33rd Battalion with the rank of Captain. He was Killed in Action on 22 November 1942 in New Guinea.
A second step-brother Kenneth Moreau Clowes served as a Corporal in World War Two.
