Ralph was the youngest of two sons of Albert McLean Goodall (born 1865 in London) and Agnes Christianne Reese (born 1869 in Sale, Victoria). Ralph immigrated with his parents and siblings to Rockhampton, QLD in 1870 and was a Bootmaker in Brisbane, QLD in 1896 when he married Agnes. Albert and Agnes lived in Brisbane, where Albert was a Boot Importer, Salesman and Warehouseman.

Ralph was living in Brisbane, QLD and working as a Salesman when he enlisted in the AIF in April 1917 - older brother Stanley enlisted in May 1917 and they both embarked in June 1916 on board the HMAT Honorata. Ralph was a Private (Service No: 6788) with 25th Infantry Battalion and was WIA in France in 1918 on two occasions.

Discharged in February 1919 Ralph returned to Brisbane, QLD where he worked as a Salesman and in 1925 he married Dorothy Elizabeth Keech (born 1903 in Gympie, QLD). Their son, Norman Joseph (born in 1918) served witht the RAAF in WWII. Ralph was mostly unemployed after the War, apart from a brief period in the 1950s when he was a Farmer in Redcliffe, QLD. Ralph died at Redcliffe in 1976.
