1 Feb 1918: Honoured Military Medal, Third Ypres, “During the operations at Broodsiende Ridge, east of Ypres, 1st to 9th October 1917, L/Cpl Mortimer was in charge of a carrying party attached to the 3rd Machine Gun Company. Throughout the operations his party carried rations and ammunition, and through his unfailing efforts and high sense of duty, he never failed at any time to get his party through to the front line despite the very bad weather conditions, almost impassable country, and continuous heavy enemy shellfire. Through his great devotion to duty he set a great example to those under him and encouraged them to carry on.” (London Gazette 4 February 1918)
