FINCK.- From wounds received in
France, Chris., the loved nephew of
H. and N. Harmer, and dearly loved
cousin of Florrie; aged 28 years.
Sadly the news to us did fall,
When we heard dear Chris. had answered
his last roll call.

Biography contributed by Andreena Hockley

Private Christian John Theodore Finck was born in Gerang Gerung, Victoria, in 1890 to Eduard (Edward) Heinrich Theodore Finck and Harriet Finck (nee Harmer).

He was a single man on enlistment, working with his father as a farmer at "Heathdale" near Heywood. During enlistment, it was noted that although Christian and both his parents were born in Australia, his grandfather was born in Germany, and clearance was required by the Portland Shire Recruiting Committee as to his loyalty to the British Empire. This, of course, was granted.

Christian enlisted on 28th August 1916. He was 26 years and 7 months old, had fair hair and blue eyes, and was 5 feet 10 inches tall. He served in the 6th reinforcements, 59th battalion, C company. He embarked on the "Nestor" at Melbourne on the 2nd October 1916, and disembarked at Plymouth on the 16th October 1916. He proceeded overseas from Folkenstone, Kent, on 25th February and arrived in Etaples, France. A month later, on 23rd March 1917, he marched out to his unit; the next day he was wounded in action. According to the Red Cross files, he was wounded at Bullecourt Woods, being hit in the head and body by shell fragments, and was unconscious when collected and taken to the dressing station. He died the following day, 25th March 1917, surviving only one day at the front.
