Son of James Quayle and Dorcas Quayle nee Tibbles of Mansfield, Victoria.

 Served a three year bakery apprenticeship with John Charles Grant.

Husband of Henrietta Quayle nee Harris of Kingston, Tasmania. James and Henrietta married on 27 March 1897 in Tasmania.

Commenced return to Australia on 22 July 1919 aboard HT Ulysses disembarking on 2 September 1919 at MElbourne for onward travel to Tasmania.
