William Edward was the eldest child of 12 born to Edward and Jane Boyes (nee Atkins).  He enlisted at Northam on 22nd September 1914 and following training in Melbourne embarked from Melbourne on the HMAT Ceramic via Albany, Western Australia and Egypt.

Bill served with the 16th Battalion as a signaller and was severely wounded in action at the Dardanelles on 27 April 1915, sustaining a gun shot wound to his right buttock and on 2 May 1915 was transferred to the HMT 'Galeka' and on 3 May to the HS 'Gookha' and repatriated to  England and admitted to 2nd Western General Hospital Manchester England on 29 May 1915.

Following recovery, Bill was invalided to Australia on the 'Star of Victoria' on 19th January 1916. He was dischared at Perth Western Australia on 22 June 1916 as medically unfit.

On 14 October 1916, Bill passed his medical and re-enlisted with the AIF.
