Sidney Cuthbert COLLINGWOOD was born in Blean, West Canterbury, England in 1887

His parents were Edward Samuel COLLINGWOOD & Emma BROWN

He had previously served during WW1 with the New Zealand Forces but was discharged due to illness (rheumatic fever) before he enlisted in Bunbury, Western Australia on 7th March 1917 & embarked with the 51st Infantry Battalion, 10th reinforcements on the ship Borda on 29th June, 1917 - he had never lived in Australia prior to enlisting but was visiting his parents who lived in Western Australia at the time

He married Gertrude Frances Annie BEAUMONT on 14th February, 1918 in St Peters Church, Hornsey Middlesex

Sidney died on 22nd February, 1919 of Broncho Pneumonia and is buried in the Sutton Veny (St John) Churchyard & his name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial

Died on this date - 22nd February........Private Sydney Cuthbert Collingwood was born in district of Blean, Kent England in 1887. He served with the New Zealand Forces in 1914 & 1915 but had been discharged due to Rheumatic Fever caught whilst on duty.

Sydney Collingwood enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Bunbury, Western Australia on 7th March, 1917 as a 27 year old Cook. According to information supplied by Mrs Gertrude Collingwood, wife of Private Sydney Cuthbert Collingwood, he had never lived in Australia but enlisted with the A.I.F. whilst visiting his parents.

Private Collingwood arrived in England on 25th August, 1917 & was posted to 13th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire. He was admitted to Group Hospital at Codford on 6th September, 1917 with Lumbago & discharged on 14th September, 1917. A Medical Report was completed on Private Collingwood on 1st December, 1917 as he had Neuritis of left thigh & chronic osteomyelitis. The Medical Board made a decision on 3rd December, 1917 & Private Collingwood was classified at C1 – which meant he was permanently unfit for General Service but fit for home service only.

Private Collingwood was attached to Australian Provost Corps at Tidworth, Wiltshire on 27th January, 1918.

Sydney Cuthbert Collingwood, aged 30, married Gertrude Francis Annie Beaumont, aged 37, on 14th February, 1918 at St. Peter’s Church, Hornsey, Middlesex.

Private Collingwood was marched out to No. 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 1st February, 1919. He was admitted to 1st Group Clearing Hospital with Influenza on 15th February, 1919. He was listed as dangerously & seriously ill at 1st Australian General Hospital, Sutton Veny on 19th February, 1919 with Broncho pneumonia.
Private Sydney Cuthbert Collingwood died at 11.30 a.m. on 22nd February, 1919 from Broncho Pneumonia.

Two Austrlian SOLDIERS WERE BURIED on 25th February, 1919 in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 139 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 2 Australian Nurses are buried.
