Son of George Upton and Annie Upton of Hobart, Tasmania.

Husband of Louisa E Upton nee Smith of Camden Street, Newtown, NSW. Richard and Louisa married during 1915c in Newtown, NSW.

20 February 1915 - enlisted at Liverpool, NSW with the 19th Battalion and with the rank of Private.

12 December 1915 - wounded in action.

31 May 1916 - wounded in action for the second time. Transferred to England aboard HS Stad Antwerpen on 11 June 1916 with a head wound.

18 March 1918 - wounded in action for the third time. Gassed.

31 August 1918 -  wounded in action for the fourth occasion. Wound to the thigh. Transferred to England on 25 September 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on 24 December 1918 aboard HT Takada as wounded disembarking on 11 February 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

13 December 1920 - discharged at the 2nd Military District as medically unfit due to wounding
