Private Francis Byrne (Service No:1632) enlisted in the AIF on 26 January 1916, and was attached to 58th Infantry Battalion on 4 May 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Suez on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln. Private Byrne was hospitalised in Abassia for Measles, and embarked from Alexandria for Marseille on 5 December 1916 on board SS Princess Victoria. WiA in France (GSW) on 12 May 1917, Private Byrne was evacuated to hospital in England. On 25 June 1917, his mother wrote to the Army requesting information about her son - 'I am very concerned and wretched concerning him, as he is reported as having died from wounds. The report appeared in the Ballarat Echo last evening Monday 25th June' (NAA). On 15 May 1919, Private Byrne embarked from Devonport for Melbourne on board HT Orontes, and was attached to 60th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 14 August 1919. Sons Thomas and Kevin served in WWII.
Born in Steiglitz via Meredith, Victoria in 1894, Frank was the second of seven children of Thomas Byrne (b1862 at Long Gully via Steiglitz, Victoria) and Susan Anastasia Byrne (b1871 in Meredith, Victoria). Thomas (a Labourer) and Susan married in 1892 in Steiglitz, where they settled and raised their family and Thomas was a Labourer.
Frank worked as a Labourer in Steiglitz before enlisting in the Army. Following his Discharge, he joined the Railways (VGR) and was working at Baddainnie Railway Station via Benalla in 1923 when he married Alice Louisa Brown (b1901 in Stratford, Victoria). Frank was a Railway Employee all his life - he and Alice lived in Baddaginnie, Violet Town and Linton before settling in Stratford in the 1950s. Frank died in 1963 and Alice in 1990.
