Son of James Caffery and Sarah Caffery nee Griffith of Dubbo,  NSW later of Leithbridge, Victoria. Brother of John Joseph Caffery who returned to Australia on 12 May 1919 having served with the 45th Battalion

Husband of Emily Caffery nee Moody of John Place, Geelong, Victoria. Joseph and Emily married in Victoria during 1906c

Commenced return to Australia on 12 March 1920 aboard HT Ceramic disembarking on 7 May 1920
