Died on this date – 10th December…… Private Thomas Ernest Osborne was born at Cardiff in 1882.
Thomas Osborne married Florence McLean in 1903 in Orange, New South Wales, Australia. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 12th June, 1916 as a 33 year old, married (with 5 children) & a Smelter from Wollongong, NSW.

He embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 7th October, 1916 with 45th Infantry Battalion, 6th Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 21st November, 1916 where he would receive further training before being sent to the War Front.

On 21st November, 1916 Private Osborne was marched in to 12th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire, England. He was admitted to Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 7th December, 1916.

Private Thomas Ernest Osborne died at 7.50 a.m. on 10th December, 1916 at Sutton Veny Military Hospital of Capillary Bronchitis Pneumonia.

He was buried in St. Mary’s New Churchyard (Anzac Cemetery), Codford, Wiltshire, England where 30 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 66 WW1 New Zealand Soldiers are located.

Private Thomas Ernest Osborne has a Private Headstone (as opposed to a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone) which was erected by comrades. His death is still acknowledged by CWGC.

**Note: Private Osborne’s Service number was 2696. The Service number 2782 on his headstone is incorrect & belonged to Private Michael Smith who is buried next to Private Osborne. Both men had their headstones erected by their Training Battalion – 12th - ‘A’ Company.
