Biography contributed by Geoffrey Gillon

Trooper Frank Vendy, Service No 502 Australian LHR, was born 1890 at Landsborough, Victoria, Australia the son of Albert Edward Vendy aged 20. Frank was adopted as a young child by his maternal grandmother Louisa Vendy of Landsborough and bought up as part of her family. His father did subsequently marry in 1902 to a Alice Perry also from Landsborough and they had several children. However Albert died in 1918. Frank had been working as a saddler in Elmhurst, a small community close to Landsborough, shortly before WW1 broke out. He enlisted at Broadmeadows (Melbourne) on 26.8.1914 aged 24 years with the 4th Light Horse Regiment, C Squadron. On his Attestation papers he is described as having a fair complexion, with brown hair, blue eyes and 5’6” tall, single and Church of England. He listed his next of kin as his mother, Mrs. Louisa Vendy. Frank embarked per HMAT Wiltshire from Melbourne on 19.10.1914 and disembarked at Egypt. After some period the 4th LHR, was deployed without their horses to reinforce the infantry, and landed at Anzac Cove Gallipoli between 22nd and 24th of May 1915. On the 21st July 1915 while in action, Frank was severely wounded with a gunshot wound and fracture of the skull. Frank was admitted to the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station then evacuated to the Military Hospital at Valetta on Malta, where he died on 31st July, 1915 aged 25. A telegram advising of Frank’s death was sent to Louisa Vendy. Sadly, a telegram was received back from Reverend Esperon of Landsborough stating “Mrs Vendy dead. Was too ill to tell son’s death”. Louisa died at Landsborough on the 8th August aged 78 only knowing that he had been injured. Subsequently his medals were collected by his uncle Alfred Vendy of Landsborough. Note: Buried with Adair CARR-BOYD, Sergeant, 1725, 2nd Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of enteric fever, 30th July 1915, aged 29 years. The son of John Adair Carr-Boyd and Rose Anna Carr-Boyd, of Argyle Cottage, Belgravia, Inverell, New South Wales. Born at Glen Innes, New South Wales.
