World War 1 Service

17 Jul 1915: Enlisted AIF WW1, Private, 4347, 8th Infantry Battalion, Place of enlistment - Melbourne, Victoria
29 Dec 1915: Embarked AIF WW1, Private, 4347, 8th Infantry Battalion, Embarked on HMAT 'A64' Demosthenes from Melbourne on 29th December 1915, disembarking Egypt. Prior to sailing Private O'Donnell attended AIF Signal School from 28th November 1915 until 20th December 1915.
29 Mar 1916: Embarked AIF WW1, Private, 4347, 8th Infantry Battalion, Embarked on SS Transylvania from Alexandria, Egypt on 29th March 1916, disembarking Marseilles, France on 4th April 1916.
20 Jul 1916: Transferred AIF WW1, Private, 8th Infantry Battalion
23 Aug 1916: Imprisoned Private O'Donnell was wounded and captured at Pozieres, France, on 23rd August 1916 and held as a POW in Germany and interred at Lazarett Ohdruf.i.Thur, then Langensalza, Cassel then Soltau, Hannover and finally Austausch Constance Baden. Transferred to Hotel Edelweiss, Murren Switzerland, on 27th November 1917. Pte O'Donnell was repatriated to England on 5th March 1918. During his imprisonment he tried to escape a number of times but was recaptured and confined to solitary confinement which affected his health.
