Son of Thomas and Bridget M. Smiles of Wilson Street, Albury, NSW. Brother of Pearce Smiles who died of wounds on 6 August 1916 while serving with the 4th Pioneer Battalion and Frank Stanley Smiles who died of wounds whilst a prisoner of war on 2 December 1915 having been captured while serving with the 19th Battalion
