Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Percy William Smith (Service No:8057) enlisted in the AIF on 19 October 1917 with 1st Infantry Training Battalion, and was attached to 12th Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit on 28 February 1918 from Melbourne for Liverpool on board HMAT A71 Nestor. Private Smith embarked from England for Tasmania on 29 August 1919 on board HT Medic, and was Discharged on 30 January 1919. Brother Horace also served in WWI.

Percy was born in Morven/Evandale, Tasmania in 1884, eldest of three children of William Smith (b1864 in Breadalbane, Tasmania) and his first wife Lucy Elizabeth Jacobson (b1860 in Launceston, Tasmania). William (a Blacksmith) and Lucy married in 1883 in Launceston, where they settled and raised their family and William was a Blacksmith. Following Lucy's death in 1890, William remarried.

Percy worked as a Blacksmith in Launceston and, in 1913 in Ulvertsone, married Florence Louisa Hampton (b1883 in George Town, Tasmania). Percy and Florence settled in Ulverstone, where they raised their family and Percy worked as a Blacksmith and Labourer. Following his Discharge from the Army in 1919, Percy and Florence moved their family to Melbourne, Victoria in 1921, where Percy worked as a Labourer and Motor Driver. Percy died in 1946 and Florence in 1960.
