Son of Thomas Joseph O'Leary and Margaret Josephine O'Leary nee Neylon of Princess Street, Croydon, SA.
Between 22 February 1919 and 31 March 1919 John was granted leave in London to study Loco fitting at the Naval Dock Yards, Chatham, England.
Commenced return to Australia on 1 August 1919 aboard HT Argyllshire as medical staff disembarking on 18 September 1919

On 4 June 1924 John married Florence Myrtle Barlow in St Giles Presbyterian Church, Norwood, SA
