Richard had retired from the British Army in 1902 after 20 years service and came to Australia with his family.

At the outbreak of WWI he enlisted with the AIF, shortly after arriving in the UK he transferred to his old British Regiment the Kings Liverpool Regiment and then in 1916 again transferred to the Canadian Forestry Corps.

He was returning to Canada on the ship Missanabie when on the 9th September 1918 he died when the ship was torpedoed of the coast of Ireland. He had been promoted to Lieutenant.
