Frederick George HOLLYOAKE was born in Birmingham, England in about 1889. He was 2-years-old when he came to Australia. His parents were Henry and Martha Hollyoake. He went to school at Bargo Public School (NSW).

He worked in the Permanent Way Branch of the Railways.

He joined the AIF on 29th January 1916 with the rank of Private (Service Number 5355). He was posted to the 14th Reinforcements to the 18th Infantry Battalion. He nominated his mother, then living at Merrylands, NSW, as his next of kin.

He was in England by 12th October 1916 when he reported sick with an unspecified ailment diagnosed to be ‘slight’. After a period with the 5th Training Battalion at Rollestone, England, he embarked for France on 13th December 1916. He marched into the 2nd Australian Division Base Depot at Etaples the next day. On 26th January 1917 he joined the 18th Infantry Battalion ‘in the field’.

On 28th February 1917 he was killed in action at Bapaume.

He is commemorated at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France. The Australian War Memorial gives his place of association as Merrylands, NSW.

After his death his mother was awarded a pension of £2 per fortnight, with effect from 22nd May 1917.
