Let us remember two brothers who Fell during The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 10th May 1917, Private George Gordon Byron Kellaway, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-3174), engine driver from 14 Margaret Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, was Killed in Action during the Second Battle of Bullecourt, age 26. Cause of death unknown.

Operator in the rail mill in the Steel Works, North Waratah, N.S.W.

Born at Kooringa, Burra, South Australia on the 3rd January 1891 to William Snr (late of South Broken Hill, N.S.W., died 30.5.1926, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 70), from "Umberumberka", 46 Henson Avenue, Mayfield East, New South Wales, and Mary Jane Kellaway nee Roberts (died 4.4.1932, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 67, mother of 7 sons, name not inscribed on headstone plaque) from "Umberumberka", 46 Henson Avenue, Mayfield East, New South Wales. Wooden cross adorned with poppies erected June 2019 in remembrance of Mary, and for all mothers who lost a son or sons during The Great War, George enlisted on the 4th October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 11th November 1916.

Mr. Kellaway is resting at Noreuil Australian Cemetery, France. Plot H Grave 11.

Place of Association - Waratah, New South Wales, Australia.

George’s name has been inscribed on the Waratah Park Memorial Gates, Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Newcastle Lodge No. 423 or 425 Ancient Order of Druids Roll of Honour, Newcastle Federated Engine-Drivers & Firemen's Association Honour Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Kellaway gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their 2 sons for God, King & Country. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) L SE. 14.

Younger brother Francis James (Frank, born 29.7.1893, Callington, South Australia, pipe fitter from 14 Margaret Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, enlisted 17.4.1916, 36th Battalion, Reg No-1918, wounded in action - 26.2.1917 (GSW back and face), KIA 3rd March 1918, Warneton, Belgium, age 24, name inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.

Younger brother Sydney Randolph (Syd, born 1898, Callington, South Australia, winch-driver from 14 Margaret Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, enlisted 4.9.1916, 36th Battalion, Reg No-2594, wounded in action - 12.10.1917 (GSW left hand, 1st Battle of Passchendaele), 30.9.1918 (GSW hand & head, slight), RTA 2.3.1919, 33rd Battalion, died 19.7.1953, age 55, resting at Cheltenham Cemetery, South Australia.

Younger brother Cecil Austin or Austyn (born 1895, Nairne, South Australia, greaser from 14 Margaret Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, enlisted 2.8.1916, 36th Battalion, Reg No-2595, wounded in action - 22.6.1918 (GSW finger, slight), RTA 3.4.1919, 33rd Battalion, died 19.10.1940, South Broken Hill, N.S.W., age 45, not officially commemorated.

Older brother William Nicholas (born 24.7.1889, Kooringa, Burra, South Australia, pipe fitter from 46 Henson Avenue, Mayfield East, New South Wales, enlisted 23.9.1918, "B" Company, Reg No-N95128, discharged in consequence of expiration of period of enlistment, died from pneumonic influenza 30.6.1919, Waratah Hospital, N.S.W., age 29, not officially commemorated) resting same location, METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) L SE. 14.
