Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

David Gordon, a 21-year-old farmer from Sharon near Bundaberg enlisted in February 1915. He left Australia in June 1915 with the 25th Battalion which was sent to Gallipoli during September 1915. Little is known of his service there, but he survived until the general evacuation of Anzac in December 1915. He arrived in France with the 25th Battalion on the 19 March 1916 and was one of the first men killed on the Western Front, a few months later, 10 June 1916. He was buried by the Reverend W.C. Smith in the Ration Farm Military Cemetery, La Chapelle d'Armentieres, France. His younger brother Andrew Gordon of Bundaberg wrote to the Army and claimed his Gallipoli medallion in 1967.

A slightly older brother, William George Gordon enlisted a few months after his brother, in January 1916. He was 21 years of age and posted to the 15th Queensland Battalion. He left Australia in May 1916 and arrived in Egypt only two weeks after his brother’s death. He joined the 15th Battalion in France just before Christmas 1916, and was only to survive about 6 weeks, being killed in action on the 1st February 1917.

Bundaberg Mail and Burnett Advertiser 13 July 1916.

"It is with deep regret we have to record the death of Private Dave Gordon, second son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Gordon of Sharon, and grandson of Mrs. M. Gordon, Buss Street, South Bundaberg, who was killed in action in France on the 10th June. Tho telegram conveying the sad intelligence was received by the mayor yesterday afternoon as follows: "Killed in action 10 June, No. 376, Private D. Gordon, 25th Battalion, please break news through Presbyterian clergyman to Mr. and Mrs. J. Gordon, of Sharon, and convey deepest sympathy of King and Queen and Commonwealth Government in loss they and the Army have sustained." Rev. D. Galloway convoyed the sad tidings to the parents last evening. Tho deceased soldier was about 19 years of age and lived with his parents, well known and extremely popular among a large circle of friends. His parents on Tuesday received a letter from him and he was then in the best of health and spirits. To the parents, sisters and brothers wo extend our deepest sympathy on the loss of their soldier son and brother who met his death bravely facing the enemy. Another son is on his way to the front."
