Wilfren enlisted under the surname spelling McDermott (WW1 he enlisted as MacDermott). He trained for a short perios at the Royal Military College Duntroon Canberra. He went onto Military Intelligence 'Directorate Army Headquarters, Victoria Barracks as a Clerk. He was discharded upon request on compassionate grounds, due to his wife Ella's ill health.
