Add my storyBiography contributed by Cowell RSL
Edgar John Elleway spent his childhood in Cowell with his older brother Lionel (who also served on Western Front) and his younger siblings Doris, George and Mary. His parents John Elleway and his mother Hannah (nee Glastonbury) later moved the family to Kilkenny, South Australia.
Prior to enlisting in the 6th Reinforcement for the 27th Battalion, Edgar had worked as a clerk for the South Australian firm of F. M. Whitney for 4½years and as a labourer.
Aged 19 years, Edgar embarked with his unit from Adelaide SA, on board HMAT A24 Benalla on 27 October 1915.
During the AIF expansion in Egypt after Gallipoli, Edgar was transferred to the 10th Battalion who due to their courage, leadership and tenacity would later become known as “The Fighting Tenth”.
After further training in Egypt the 10th Battalion embarked for France and disembarked at Marseilles, France on 3 April 1916 then moved by rail to a quieter section of trenches at Strazeele where they underwent further training and were introduced to the P.H. Gas Helmet. In July and August the battalion fought in the historically fierce battles for Poziers and Mouquet Farm.
Private Elleway survived Pozieres but on 23 August 1916 was wounded during the fighting at Mouquet Farm and at just 20 years of age died of his wounds the following day at the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station.
He was later buried at Puchevillers British Cemetery (Plot III, Row E, Grave No. 23).
