From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
102 years ago, from the 8th to 11th August 1918, The Battle of Amiens began, the crucial Allied breakthrough counter-offensive, launched on the Western Front around Amiens, in the Somme sector. The Allies made effective use of infantry, artillery, tanks and aircraft, which led to an unprecedented advance (about 12 kilometres by early afternoon of the first day) and vast numbers of German prisoners.
Pte Burgess is one of eight soldiers of the 1st A.I.F. who fell during this battle are memorialised, or awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
Private William Henry Burgess, 3rd Battalion, labourer from William Street, Stockton, New South Wales, fell on the 9th August 1918, age 25.
