Corporal Charles Prowse Allen, son of Mr. Frederick S. Allen, head teacher of the Inverleigh School, died of wounds in France on the 23rd of July, 1916. He was born in 1890. He was a pupil of the Melbourne High School in 1905-6, and, at the beginning of 1907, he took up the duties of junior teacher at School No. 11, Allan's Flat. He was at the Teachers' College in 1909-10. Afterwards, he held the position of head teacher at 3158, Neerim East; 3054, Hill End, near Moe; 3371, Mirboo West; and 2990, Lalbert.
He enlisted on the 29th of July, 1915, and, on the 7th of March, 1916, he embarked with the 15th Reinforcements to the 6th-Battalion on the transport Wiltshire.
While in Egypt, training at Tel-el-Kebir, he was transferred to the 59th Battalion, and he went to France with this unit on the 18th of June. He was promoted Corporal on the 3rd of July, he was wounded on the 19th, and he died on the 23rd.
His official reports refer to him as a very good teacher and organizer, and commend his bright, encouraging manner.
