Henry was the son of Henry Thomas and Mary Smith of Sandgate, Queensland.
His older brother, 10536 Dvr. James Smith 23rd Company, Australian Army Service Corps, died of wounds on 13 October 1917, aged 29.
Henry served for 60 days in Gallipoli, went to France as acting Sergeant and was sent to England as Bayonet Instructor for eight months. He returned to France and was wounded during August 1918, and after recovery was at the Front, where he was killed during the last fight of the AIF during October 1918.
