He was 32 and the son of Julian Arthur and Elizabeth Ashton; husband of Mary A. Ashton, of The Hospital, Tiverton, Devon, England.

He was hospitalized a number of times and it is likely that his wife, Mary Lane was a nurse. He married her only a few months before embarking for France where he was killed in action.
