The son of Oliver James and Elizabeth Adelaide Smith, of Brookdale Station, Burketown, Queensland.

His younger brother, 740 Pte. Harold Wright Smith 31st Battalion AIF died of wounds in France on 23 January 1917, aged 20.

Oliver was reported to be buried 750 yards east of Messines, Belgium but his grave could not be located at the end of the war.
