Died on this date – 5th January..... Private Ferdinand Theodore Wundenberg was born in South Australia around 1881-1882 (there are discrepancies on his place & date of birth). He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 4th July, 1916 as a 35 year old, married, Bootmaker from Parkside, South Australia.

Private Ferdinand Theodore Wundenberg embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on HMAT Anchises (A68) on 28th August, 1916 with the 11th Infantry Brigade, 43rd Infantry Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 11th October, 1916. He was posted to training at Codford then Durrington, Wiltshire.

Private Wundenberg was admitted to Hospital on 18th November, 1916 with Pterygium (eye trouble) & was discharged from Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire on 29th November, 1916.

Private Wundenberg proceeded to France & joined 38th Battalion on 12th February, 1917.

Private Ferdinand Theodore Wundenberg was wounded in action (gassed) on 7th June, 1917. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship St. David on 10th June, 1917 & admitted to Horton County of London War Hospital, Epsom on 11th June, 1917. Private Wundenberg was discharged to furlo on 25th July, 1917 then admitted to 1st A.D.H. (Australian Dermatological Hospital) at Bulford, Wiltshire on 13th August, 1917 with V.D. He was discharged from Hospital on 20th August, 1917 & was posted to No. 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, Wiltshire.

Private Wundenberg proceeded to France on 19th September, 1917 & rejoined his Unit on 30th September, 1917.

Private Wundenberg was detached from his Unit on 15th November, 1917 & proceeded to 3rd A.D.B.D. ”Unfit for service in the field” as per Medical Board. He was invalided to England on 16th December, 1917 on Hospital Ship Grantully Castle.

Private Wundenberg was admitted to the University War Hospital, Hampshire, England on 17th December, 1917 with Bronchitis.

Private Ferdinand Theodore Wundenberg died at 1.50 pm on 5th January, 1918 at University War Hospital, Hampshire, England from Bronchitis. He was buried in Netley Military Cemetery, Hampshire, England where 49 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
