Biography contributed by Greg Towner

From my research.

Hugh Gillanders' father died in 1896 and a death record exists for Alexander Gillander (11488/1896) in the Ryde, Sydney, NSW, District.   His mother Mary died in Maclean in 1910 (Mary Gillanders 5975/1910).   After his father's death Hugh may have been in the care of his uncle, Donald Gillies who lived at Chatsworth near Maclean.   On enlistment Hugh listed his sister, Miss R. Gillanders living with Donald Gillies, as his next of kin.   Indications are that Hugh was well-liked in the Maclean district.   Gunner Alexander Donald McAulay wrote to his own mother in Chatsworth saying he had heard how "brave Hughie Gillanders was killed".
