Lieutenant Lyle Laurence Hattam (Service No:VX138164) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V205007) as a Private with 24th Infantry Battalion and Australian Intelligence Corps before Discharging on 4 April 1943. Sergeant Hattam was 'in the field' in New Guinea with Signals 3rd Division when he enlisted in the AIF and served with 3 Australian Cipher Division and 22 Australian Cipher Section. Promoted to Warrant Officer II on 10 February 1944, and Lieutenant on 6 June 1945, he served with 38, 9 and 22 Cipher Sections in Lae and Bougainville before returning to Sydney in June 1946 with 19 LoC Signals. Lieutenant Hattam was attached to Signals 3 Australian Division at Discharge on 25 July 1946.
Lyle was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1922, second of three children of Allan Eustace Hattam (b1891 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Alma Goodenough (b1898 in Jamieson, Victoria). Allan was a Draper (Hattam Bros Pty Ltd - in partnership with his brother) in 1916 when he and Alma married in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family. Allan was a Draper/Mercer.
Lyle was a Store Manager (Hattam Bros Drapers) prior to his enlistment in the Army, and in 1948 in Melbourne, married Winifred (Win) Ruby Dobbie (b1921 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Win worked as a Typiste in Melbourne and had served in the WRAN in WWII. Lyle and Win settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Lyle was Store Manager and Draper. Lyle died in 2008 and Win in 2022.
