18 Jan 1918: Honoured Military Medal, Citation: Near Warneton, during a raid on the enemy on night of 30th November/1st December, 1917, this man displayed conspicuous bravery. With his section he rushed a large party of the enemy with great determination and inflicted heavy casualties with bomb and bayonet. He personally accounted for at least nine of the enemy. He was a splendid example of coolness and courage. Strength of raiding party - 4 Officers and 82 other Ranks London Gazette on 13 March 1918, page 3249, position 1. 28 Mar 1918: Wounded AIF WW1, Private, 2125, 40th Infantry Battalion, Wound to the hand. A finger later amputated. Embarked for England aboard HT Stad Antwerpann on 3 April 1918.
31 Aug 1918: Wounded AIF WW1, Private, 2125, 40th Infantry Battalion, Second occasion. Severe wound to the forearm and leg. Invalided to England on 5 September 1918
15 Aug 1919: Discharged AIF WW1, Private, 2125, 40th Infantry Battalion, Discharged at the 6th Military District as medically unfit due to wounding

Son of Ernest Oates and Rosetta Edith Oates nee Bennett of Grove, Tasmania.

Commenced return to Australia on 28 November 1918 abord HT Suevic disembarking on 5 January 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Hobart.

On 21 October 1927 Darcy married Violet Glass in the Wesley Manse, Hobart, Tasmania.
