18 Jan 1918: | Honoured Military Medal, Citation: Near Warneton, during a raid on the enemy on night of 30th November/1st December, 1917, this man displayed conspicuous bravery. With his section he rushed a large party of the enemy with great determination and inflicted heavy casualties with bomb and bayonet. He personally accounted for at least nine of the enemy. Son of Ernest Oates and Rosetta Edith Oates nee Bennett of Grove, Tasmania.
Commenced return to Australia on 28 November 1918 abord HT Suevic disembarking on 5 January 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Hobart.
