Sydney was the second son of Sydney Herbert Couch and Ellen Sarah Loughlin.
He first enlisted on 23 October 1939 and was married 3 February 1940 to Loris Lorna Dickfos, before embarking on the HMTY 1 on 14 April 1940.
He was discharged on 16 December 1941 as medically unfit after losing two fingers on his right hand on 5 May 1941.
He again enlisted on 18 February 1943
