One of six siblings who served in WWII, Captain Cyril George Dwyer (Service No:VX30174) enlisted in the AIF on 7 June 1940 as a Private with 9 Division Petrol Coy, was a Sergeant when he served in Palestine from 9 December 1940 to 30 January 1942. Lieutenant Dwyer was then attached to 1 Australian Petrol Depot, and served in New Guinea - Fall River, Port Moresby, Tarakan, Morotai and Tanamerah Bay - with 3 Australian Bulk Issue Petrol and Oil Depot (BIPOD) - from 16 June 1943 to 28 May 1944 and 16 November 1944 to 4 September 1945. Captain Dwyer was attached to BIPOD NG L of C AASC at Termination of Appointment on 6 October 1945.
Cyril was born in Glenrowan, Victoria in 1907, fifth of ten children of Thomas Dwyer (b1874 at King Parrot Creek via Flowerdale, Victoria) and Flora Gillies McLean (b1883 at Riddells Creek in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria). Thomas and Flora married in 1901 in Melbourne, and lived at Yea, Violet Town, Strath Creek, Glenrowan, Benalla and Wangaratta, where they raised their family. Thomas worked as a Farmer, Saw Mill Owner, Wheat Buyer and General Commission Agent. Thomas served with the 10th Light Horse Regiment, was a member of the Glenrowan Cricket Team and Captain of the Glenrowan Rifle Club.
Cyril worked in Warragul as a Shop Assistant, and in 1931 in Melbourne married his first wife Margaret (Winifred) McAuliffe (b1907 in Glenrowan, Victoria). Cyril and Winifred settled in Melbourne, where Cyril was a Salesman in 1932 when Winifred (and their son) died in childbirth. In 1936 in Melbourne, Cyril remarried to Elsie Muriel Bennett (b1914 in Mildura, Victoria). Cyril and Elsie settled in Melbourne, where Cyril was a Grocer. In 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, Cyril and Elsie were living in Mildura and Cyril was working as a Clerk and Storeman. Following his Discharge in 1945, Cyril and Elsie settled in Melbourne, where Cyril worked as a Clerk and Salesman, and was a Company Director in 1966 when he died. Elsie died in 1989.
