Wounded in the left thigh on 12 October 1917 at about 2.30am in the morning while moving up to the line for an attack. The wound was very severe, fracturing the thigh bone. Private Grinter was operated on at the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station the same day before being taken to the the No.3 Canadian General Hospital on the 13 October 1917. He was again operated on to remove the foreign body and during the next few days rapidly spreading infection developed and it was necessary to amputate the leg in an attempt to save his life. Unfortunately he developed blood poisoning and died on the 18 October 1917.
