WO Kaufman was the youngest of six siblings to serve in WWII - his brother Squadron Leader Kaufman - in an interview with Laurence (Laurie) Fields (AWM) stated '.... youngest brother, we passed somewhere between here and England on the boat - he was going to England when I was coming home - as a Pilot Officer, Fighter Piolt and finished up being sent all round England and Scotland - never got into a fighter plane over there, or fighter squadron'.
Born in 1924 in Ascot Vale Victoria, Sydney was the seventh of eight children of Henry Kaufmann (b1884 in Box Hill, Victoria) and Mary Ann May Pigdon (b1892 in Queenscliff, Victoria). Henry was a Farmer when he enlisted for the Boer War (Trooper; Service No:867) and Clerk in 1911 when he and Mary married in Queenscliff, Victoria. The couple settled in Melbourne and Henry served in WWI (Captain) remaining in the Army. Henry was a Major (Service No:V159890) in WWII when he died in 1944.

Following his Discharge from the RAAF, Sydney returned to Melbourne and was a Teacher in 1947 when he married Louie Bushell (b1925 in Lincolnshire, England) - Louie had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1926, arriving in Melbourne on board the Jervis Bay. Sydney worked as a Teacher in Melbourne and Wedderburn in the Wimmera before moving to Ballarat where Sydney was a Company Director. Louie died in Geelong in 2000 and Sydney in 2008.
