Frank George Stephens (SN 143), a Sebastopol-born Farmer, enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion on 18th August 1914. He embarked from Melbourne in October, first to Egypt and then to Gallipoli in April 1915. On 15th May 1915 he received a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, remaining in hospital for a month before being discharged to base on 26th June 1915. He received his first promotion to Lance Corporal on 5th May 1916 before returning to hospital due to illness. He crossed to France from England on 2nd September 1916, re-joining the 8th Battalion in Belgium. He was promoted to Sergeant on 27th July 1917 before being killed in action at Broodseinde on 4th October 1917. He has no known grave. His name is recorded on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Official notification has been received by Mr Stephens, of Albert street, Sebastopol, that his son, Pte Frank Stephens, has been killed in action in France. Pte Stephens, who was one of the original Anzacs, was 21 years of age. he has two brothers on active service, and a fourth brother has been invalided  home to Australia.
