Harold Marriott was born in 1984 and grew up in Queenstown, Port Adelaide Enfield, South Australia. He attended Alberton Public School and Marist Brothers Port Adelaide before becoming a Blacksmith's Striker.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during World War I at the age of 21. He served as a Private with the 27th Infantry Battalion, stationed at Keswick, South Australia.
