SAPPER A. H. DARVALL
News came to hand on Saturday that Sapper Alfred Henry Darvall, third son of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Darvall of California Gully, had been killed in action. Sapper Darvall was born in  Chiltern 39 years ago. and spent the greater part of his life in this district. He enlisted in October last year, and sailed with the Pioneer Battalion in December. He was transferred  to the Field Engineers in England. In his last letter, he mentioned that he expected shortly to go to the front. Just prior to enlisting He married Miss Lila Thomas (sister of the Rev.  John Thomas, of the Methodist Church), who resides at Long Gully. Some years ago deceased was an active member of the Eaglehawk Rowing Club and was very closely  connected with the Eaglehawk Presbyterian Church and Sunday School, and acted as secretary of the latter for 12 months prior to enlisting.
He represented a syndicate at Maldon Island, one of the Pacific islands. His brother, Trooper Charles Darvall, of Golden-square returned from the front in December last.
