Son of Patrick O'Keefe and Elizabeth O'Keefe of 'Whitley', Canonbury Road, Dulwich Hill, NSW
Prior to enlisting John had been employed with H. Murray & Co. for three years.
Commenced return to Australia on 27 September 1918 aboard HT Runic disembarking on 26 November 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel overland to Brisbane
