Son of Thomas Varley and Mary Ann Varley nee Hewitt of 'Box Grove', Horsham, Victoria. Brother of Ernest Arthru Varley who returned to Australia on 24 September 1918 having served with the 60th Battalion. 

Commenced return to Australia 8 October 1918 from Taranto, Italy aboard HT Port Sydney disembarking on 23 November 1918

Medals: Meritiorious Service Medal, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

18 January 1919 - Awarded Meritorious Service Medal:- 

R.Q.M.S. Varley has served continuously with his Battalion from February to September, 1918. During this most difficult period he has shown himself to be most capable and conscientious in the execution of his duty, particularly in the recent operations from 8th August, 1918 to September, 1918, whilst forwarding of supplies was of the utmost importance this W.O. was untiring in his work for his Battalion.
