Postcard to his mother
Robert Herman Mountford was my great uncle, my grandmother Edith's brother. My mother Gladys passed down the postcard he sent to his mother Sarah Mountford, my great grandmother, during WW1. His father Thomas Mountford was listed as next of kin on his enlistment papers.
I have transcribed the postcard to print for easy reading.
His mother wrote on the postcard "arrived here on the 20th February 1918."
Bristol England December 18th 1917.
"My dear mother,
At present as you can see above I am in the city of Bristol. How I got here is quite romantic. I left camp four days past with the intention of proceeding to Cardiff in Wales and having to pass through Bristol. I stayed there one night, and liked it so well that I am here yet having a great time, but next time I start for Cardiff I will go around this joint. I am in the best of health hoping you are all the same. I will send a letter when I arrive back at camp. It will soon be Christmas time here and most likely over there too. We will not get any leave xmas time on account of overcrowding the trains which do not run as often as they did on account of the coal shortage. Well so long. With love to all I remain your loving son Robert."
