Son of Robert and Grace F. Lyall of Clarence Town, NSW.
Brother of James Lyall who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 while serving with the 1st Battlion and is buried in the Aeroplane Cemetery Plot 111, Row B, Grave 30 and John (Jack) Lyall MM who returned to Australia on 12 May 1918 having served with the 1st Machine Gun Battalion

Prior to enlisted he was employed as a clerk in the Department of Education
