John Thomas STAGOLL was born in Ararat in 1895 and was working for the Postmaster General's Department as a Mail assistant when he joined the AIF in 1915.
His next of kin was his Father, Edwin Stagoll of Barkly Street Sunbury although John appears to have been living in Richmond.
A keen sportsman, John played 17 games of Australian Rules football for the Hawthorn FC in 1914/1915.
He was also a member of the Yarra Borderers 56th Infantry based in Richmond.
John left for overseas on 3/7/1916 aboard the HMAT Ayrshire as part of the Australian Medical Corps.
Between his time of enlisting and embarking he married Alice Adeline Stagoll, and she, along with John's father settled at 34 Dover Street Richmond.
John served in England and France with the Medical Corps and at one stage was transferred to the Postal Corps for a short time.
He contracted pneumonia which kept him in hospital for some weeks.
John returned to Australia on 21/6/1919 and was discharged on 5/8/1919. He returned to the PMG and resumed mail work.
John died at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on 19/7/1965 and is remembered at the Springvale Cemetery.
