Son of Frank Thomas PAYNE and Helena Elizabeth PAYNE nee COOTE, Wombramurra, Nundle, New South Wales
Husband of Nina Mary PAYNE nee KING
Mr. Merton Payne, a well-known resident of Nundle and Tamworth districts, died at his residence, Brisbane-street, Tamworth, on Tuesday night. A son of Mr. and Mrs. F. T. Payne, of 'Wombramurra,' Nundle, deceased, who was 49, had carried on grazing pursuits in that district for many years.
The late Mr. Payne was keenly interested in district affairs, and for a long time was a Councillor of Nundle Shire, of which he had been President until his retirement recently. He was a returned soldier, and was President of the Nundle sub-branch, of the League. He was, too, a very keen supporter of, and tireless worker for, Tamworth Pastoral and Agricultural Association, and for several years was its President.
Deceased was also a keen sportsman, and in the years after the Great War he was one of the best all-round cricketers in Tamworth district. He was a golfer too, a member of Tamworth and Nundle Clubs, and President of the latter for a long time.
He is survived by Mrs. Payne (formerly Miss Nina King), and two children.
The late Mr. Payne was the only brother of Mr. S. Payne, of 'Waverley,' Gundy, well-known and public spirited citizen of the Upper Hunter, which he visited periodically, and where he also had very many friends, all of whom will commiserate with the bereaved ones in the loss of an exemplary citizen in every sense of the word.
