5t Field Ambulance - A.I.F

 

Frederick was killed in action Ypres Belgium

29 October 1917 age 33

His grave can be found at Ramparts Cemetery, Lille Gate Ypres Flanders, Belgium

Fred was the eldest son of Frederick and Elizabeth Searle of Morton Market Street Randwick he worked in Sydney as a shipping clerk for North Coast Shipping Company

and was a member of the Coogee Surf Club and of the Randwick Institute Rifle Club  

Fred was the nephew of Mr. James Searle a well - known NSW cricketer – Baseball couch – manager and cousin of Clifford James Searle, James Searle son

He joined the A.I.F. 10 August 1915 Liverpool NSW,

he served in Egypt – France – Belgium

And was temporarily detached with 2nd Australian Divisional Headquarters in Ypres Belgium for duty as a clerk, and when the HQ came under attack from German artillery Fred was in a trench with six other soldiers when a German shell entered the trench killing all of them.

All of those killed are buried side by side at Ramparts Cemetery, Lille Gate Ypres

Frederick had five brothers and two sisters, two of his brothers served in

1st & 5th Field ambulance and one in the 9th battalion

Arthur - served in Egypt and Gallipoli -

1st Field Ambulance

Albert  - served in Egypt -

1st Australian Dermatological Hospital

Henry – served in Egypt – Western Front France  Belgium - 9th Infantry Battalion A.I.F.

 

His cousin Private 3896 Clifford James Searle M.M. 

was awarded the Military Medal 

For conspicuous: bravery in the field, he was also in 5th field ambulance at the time of Fred’s death – he served in - Egypt and Gallipoli - Western Front France – Belgium
