One of four siblings who served in WWII (Dardanella, Ernest, Margaret and Roderick), Private Margaret Jean McRae (Service No:Vf397306) served in the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) from 16 January 1943 to 28 October 1944. Private McRae - graded Driver, re graded Clerk - served with 4 Ordnance Stores, and 2 and 3 Base Ordnance Depots (BOD).
Margaret was born in Warracknabeal, Victoria in 1923, seventh of eight children of Roderick (William) Seaman McRae (b1883 in Ararat, Victoria) and Florence (Flora) Myrtle Millstead (b1891 in Geelong, Victoria). William and Flora married in 1908 in Warracknabeal, where they settled and raised their family and William worked as a Labourer. William served in the Army in WWI (Private; Service No:1660) and was WiA at Gallipoli (GSW resulting in amputation of leg). William returned to Warracknabeal, where he worked as a Labourer until his death in 1926. Flora died in 1929.
Margaret was working in Melbourne as a Grocer's Assistant in 1943 when she enlisted in the Army. Following her Dischage in 1944, Margaret returned to Melbourne, and in 1952 married Ernest Alfred Gladstone (b1918 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Ernest served in the Army in WWII (Service Nos:V290664/VX138424), and was a Grocer in Melbourne. Margaret and Ernest settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Ernest worked as a Manager and Grocer. Margaret died in 1994 and Ernest died in 1998.
