Son of George and Sarah WINNETT (nee Eudey)
He left Melbourne in September 1915 and was shot in the left hand, arm and leg in August 1916 and recuperated in England. He then had five occasions of absence without leave including one of 20 days. He returned to the front and was gassed in July 1918. while on furloughin October 1918 he married May Hollingsworth in London. He returned to the front and was gassed in July before being discharged and returned to Australia in October 1919
